Natural gas

Natural gas is one of the most important energy vectors worldwide.
Natural gas plays a significant role in the global energy system, supporting electricity generation, industrial activity, and residential and commercial energy use. Due to its lesser environmental impact compared to other hydrocarbons, it has become a key element for energy transition and security. Its versatility and efficiency make it a strategic option for the energy, industrial, and residential sectors, and to consolidate the value chain of renewable energy sources such as biomethane and hydrogen.

Regional relevance and global influence
The North America subcontinent is one of the top world’s producers and consumers of natural gas. Canada, the United States, and Mexico are connected through extensive energy infrastructure, cross-border trade and investment, and increasingly interdependent natural gas markets. This configuration highlights opportunities for greater regional cooperation, technological innovation, environmental sustainability, energy security, social justice and more resilient energy systems, while also raising questions regarding the role of natural gas in the global energy transition.

A turning point in Mexico.
The existing infrastructure and recent regulatory advances open opportunities to optimize, expand, and diversify the natural gas value chain. An efficient and less polluting chain will allow the country to meet international commitments regarding climate change and energy transition, while also promoting economic development and technological progress.
